Laura Gomez

Short Bio

I am a PhD student in the Biomedical Sciences Program at National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Professor Rafael Palacios Lab. I am doing a short term internship in Professor Michael Schatz Lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL).

Sequencing technologies are generating an immense amount of data. A collection of methods and algorithms have been developed to detect variation between individual genomes using the data generated. However all algorithms are far from being perfect and a lot of work still needs to be done. I'm working in a method to detect any kind of polymorphisms with high specificity. This new approach is entirely based on unique perfect matches between unique small sequences of the reference genome and the reads of a sequencing experiment. One of my main goals is to apply this method to detect de novo variants
